Walk into any lounge room that feels right and try to work out why. Nine times out of ten, the answer is on the floor.
Not the sofa, not the art, not the carefully considered lamp in the corner. The rug. It is the piece that every other decision in the room is quietly responding to, whether or not the person who made those decisions realised it at the time. And yet it gets chosen last. After the budget has taken a beating on the furniture. After the walls are already painted. After the room is essentially done and something needs to go on the floor.

Material is where to begin, because a lounge room rug is not a decorative object in any simple sense. It is a surface that gets walked on daily, sat on occasionally, dropped on regularly, and dragged across more often than anyone admits. What it’s made of determines whether it’s still worth looking at in five years.

The default is rectangular. Always rectangular rugs. The room is a rectangle, the furniture is roughly rectangular, so the rug follows.

A round rug in a lounge room does something that a rectangle simply cannot: it breaks the geometry. In a space full of straight edges and right angles, a circle reads as a conscious decision rather than a default. It pulls the eye inward, creates a natural gathering point beneath the coffee table, and softens a room that might otherwise feel efficient but not particularly warm.
Round rugs for living room also handle awkward furniture arrangements better than rectangular ones. An L-shaped sofa that never quite fits a standard rug size. A room with an off-centre focal point. A lounge that opens into a dining area and needs to define its own zone without a hard border. In all of these situations, a round living room rug works with the irregularity rather than fighting it.
Size still matters. A round carpet placed too small under a coffee table looks like a coaster. It should extend generously beyond the table on all sides, enough that the furniture above it seems to belong to it rather than float above it.
Living Room Rug Colours: The Palette Worth Trusting Right Now
Cool greys and stark off-whites have had a long run. The rooms that are inspiring people now tend to work with warmer ground and the rugs in those rooms reflect it.
Terracotta, ochre, warm stone and the earthy reds that sit somewhere between rust and burgundy: these are the tones that colour psychology research consistently associates with calm, stability and the particular feeling of comfort that a lounge room exists to provide. They also age well. A terracotta rug in a room that gets daily use looks better at three years than it did at three months. The wear reads as warmth rather than damage.
For rooms built on neutral walls and natural wood, rugs and carpets in earthy tones provide warmth without competition. For rooms that already have some colour in the walls or upholstery, warm stone or undyed natural jute grounds the space without adding another voice to the conversation.
Deep jewel tones are the other direction worth considering. Floor carpets in midnight blue and forest green work especially well in rooms with generous natural light, where they read as depth rather than weight. The rule of thumb: the darker the handmade rug, the more light the room needs to carry it.
What consistently doesn’t work: a rug that matches the sofa too precisely (the room loses dimension), and a rug so cautious it contributes nothing (which is its own kind of mistake, just a quieter one).
Lounge Room Rug Do’s and Don’ts
- Size up, always: Interior designers ask about rug size more than any other single decision, and the answer is almost universally the same: the handmade rug you’re considering is probably too small. In a lounge room, at minimum the front legs of every seating piece should sit on the rug. All four legs are better. Leave six to eight inches of bare floor between the rug edge and the wall on all sides. When genuinely uncertain between two sizes, take the larger.
- Don’t choose the rug last: The lounge room rug should inform the furniture arrangement, not follow it. Starting from the floor up produces better rooms.
- Do layer: A large neutral jute base with a smaller patterned rug laid over it near the coffee table gives the floor depth and flexibility. It also means a beautiful smaller rug that would otherwise be too small for the space can actually work.
- Don’t skip the rug pad: It keeps the rug from moving, adds underfoot comfort, protects the floor beneath, and extends the rug’s usable life. It is the least interesting purchase in the room and one of the most worthwhile.
- Do let the rug lead: The rooms that hold together best are the ones where one element set the tone and everything else responded to it. More often than not, that element is the floor.
